Through lavender mists of memory, Douglas recalls from his childhood refrains of Deep Purple, while Rkt reminisces on growing up when the Richie Blackmore was the heart of the group called Deep Purple.
Douglas therefore noted they had something in common.
I guess then, as a Space Truckin' Highway Star, having grown up with both influences, I am a rather Strange Kind of Woman. Although, actually I wasn't that "deep" into either one at the time.
Of interest, though, might be that I have a copy of the original sheet music for Deep Purple, music by Peter De Rose, lyrics by Mitchell Parish, Copyright 1934 and 1939 [how about that, DT?] by Robbins Music Corporation, New York, NY....including the intro, and with French translation and guitar tab, too. It's in Bb.
After all the copyright discussions, it's interesting to read how these things were handled in "those" days: Words added below music read, "All Rights Reserved Including Public Performance For Profit. Any arrangement or adaptation of this composition without the consent of the owner is an infringement of copyright." Then on the side margin of one page, it says, "WARNING! Any person who willfully and for profit copies the whole or any part of the Words or Music of this song, shall be liable to Criminal Prosecution under the United States Copyright Laws."
I'm not certain exactly how old these pages are, although the music is a reprint of the original, but one of the snippets of other music for sale by the company given on the back has a copyright date of 1950-1951 [The Loveliest Night of the Year], so I imagine that's about when this parti- cular sheet was published. It had a price of 60 cents!
So, remember...if you see someone wandering back to you through the mist of a memory, it may just be Smoke on the Water.
