Item Subject: cc:Mail Text I've had a lot of discussions about creativity and how you can help yourself step outside of the norms when playing. The mention of the movie "Bird" got me thinking again (yep, I thought it was depressing). It seems that disabling your conscious mind leads to more innovation. Lots of junkies on the list of "greats". I know that eliminating fear of failure/mistakes makes all the difference in the world in one's performance because part of innovating is taking mistakes in stride and building on them (as I say here at work "there's a fine line between clever and stupid").
I was wondering whether anyone out there had done any personal research on musical creativity. I was just listening to a tape of a show where I was really sick with the flu. During the last set I could barely stand up, but my harp playing was different and IMO sounded really cool. During one solo when I was trading licks with the guitar player we went on for a couple of minutes and then I hear myself say, "Whoa, there are people out there" or something like that.
I've found that I am more creative when I am only marginally in control of my faculties (OK, some would say that's every day). Be this from meditation, fever, depression (I've chosen not to do this anymore :), oxygen deprivation during long flights, sleep deprivation. Drugs also work on occasion, but you have the side effects like lack of coordination and government intervention to deal with (not to mention longer term life and health issues).
Any great mind-releasing techniques out there?
Please excuse me for the lengthy message, but inquiring minds ...
