Subject: Cold sores

Hi,

The prescription standard for Herpes lesions is Acyclovir
ointment. Acyclovir is an antiviral agent, and should shorten
the course of the lesions. Any oral anesthetic gel can be used
to reduce the discomfort.
To remind those with cold sores - they are very contagious
until crusted over, so don't share harps or kiss anyone until
they have resolved. This is particularly important since, once
a person contracts Herpes, they can get lesions periodically for
life. Wash hands after touching your mouth or harps. Clean
microphones with alcohol before the next person handles them.
In particular, make every effort to avoid passing this on to
infants.
Cold sores should be differentiated from the lesions of
aphthous stomatis, which are extremely common, noncontagious
lesions of uncertain etiology. These are very painful, and occur
anywhere inside the mouth and resemble white craters. They do
not occur on the borders of the lips, as do Herpes lesions.
The term cold sore should be reserved for true Herpes lesions.
