At the risk of assuming incorrectly, are you talking about rhythm, in the
sense of meter and playing with the beat, or are you talking about keeping
track of the cycle of the measure? Sometimes it can take a new musician a
long time to learn to hear where the beginning of each measure is and the
phrasing of a song progression.

If this is the case, practice counting along with the music you are listening
to. If it is a 12-bar blues, you might try counting along like this:

1-2-3-4
2-2-3-4
3-2-3-4
4-2-3-4
etc.
