I've just picked up a nice little (16-page) book that I think will help me in learning chromatic, so I pass this along for what it's worth. It's called "Scales and Arpeggios for Oboe" by Daniel G. Theaker (Thomas & Gray Edition, copyright 1995) and is directed at the beginning musician (which on chro I still am). It starts out with single-octave work (major and melodic minor scales, major and minor arpeggios) in C, G, D, F and Bb. The next section adds the second octave and a couple more keys, and the final section covers all keys and goes from C below the staff to F above, which covers two and a half octaves of my three-octave chro. I paid $8 at a local sheet music store.
For me (note "for me"!), such structured study helps me pattern my brain to the instrument by linking the notes on the page to the hole-location/blow-direction/slide-position on the harmonica. I don't frankly enjoy doing exercises as much as playing "real" music, but I enjoy what it does for me: it helps me play the real music better.
