Subject: Choice of Instruments

Barry:

My experience has been sort of the opposite of yours . . .

I used to do the same thing(sax and flute and chro in my case), but
put the other axes away because they "were" easier, less awkward,
and more straightforward than the diatonic, and the only way I
could compel myself to "deal" with the diatonic issues, was to
not resort to playing the other instruments.

It's really a matter of what you want to do. I really liked playing
flute(especially!),sax, and chro, but I LOVED playing diatonic-
I just couldn't always play the music I wanted to play.

When I met Howard, I just realized that the potential was there
to do it, if I wanted to do the work, and if I wanted it enough . . .

It's not always fun and it doesn't always come easy, but
I've found that the only way I could do it was to "risk"
sounding bad, so I could find out how to get through
that particular obstacle.

Again, I'm not making any value judgment on anyone's
personal choices or approach, but for me, I really wanted
to play diatonic because I just love the sound and the "feel"
of the instrument-so I put the other axes down . . .

Good question . . . I'm interested in other's experiences or
thoughts . . .
