It has been tried, and there are players that do it. However, 20+
years of experience with all sorts of rigs and studio efects have
shown me that there's no escaping the difference between solid state
and tube amplification. Of course, if you're playing chromatic with a
bebop combo, you won't want that fat tube distortion. But for blues,
rock, and some country players, tubes and certain circuit
arrangements are simply the only way to go.
