All this talk about improved Marine Bands got me tinkering around. I had a few old Marine Bands that I didn't play anymore (too leaky, bad action, etc.), and some old Special 20s that were just plain worn out. So I thought I'd try fitting the Marine Band hardware onto the Special 20 plastic combs.
First, I cut the cover standoffs and registration berms off the S20 combs. The MB reed plates were a little too long to fit in the groove (about 2mm) so I filed them down. Next I flattened the backs of the cover plates to allow for a little more projection, and flattened the ends of the covers (where the nail holes are). I drilled the cover plates on the ends to allow the S20's binding bolts to fasten them together. In the interest of air tightness, I added a layer of 3M micropore tape to the insides of the reed plates. I also added a thin double-layer of micropore to the inside fronts of the covers. I adjusted the reed gap, and assembled them with the S20 bolts.
The result is a very air-tight, very well projected Marine Band. The action is great, and they have tone for days. If you want to see how they turned out (an admittedly puny Polaroid photo) check out:
