Subject: THE MELODICA

Hey all you guys and gals out there...You're just a little bit late in
regards to the Melodica...I introduced it (for Hohner)on the radio, and
gave demonstrations on it in New York (at Macy's) more years ago than I
care to admit to...it was Hohner's answer to the "Clavietta" which was
the Italian forerunner.I have used the Melodica in my performances for
many years and still do...I play it to make fun of accordion players who
invariably play 'LADY OF SPAIN" and do the"Bellows shake"...I tell the
audiences the story of the accordionist who walked into a bank with his
accordion ...walked right up to the teller and said: GIMME ALL YOUR
MONEY, OR I'LL PLAY LADY OF SPAIN!!!..And then I go ahead and do exactly
that..But seriously, for what it is, it is a helluvan instrument..It can
do many things that the harmonica cannot...But what it can't do, is
create the charm and wonder that is produced by a person playing a
relatively tiny instrument, like a chromatic, and being accompanied by a
(subservient?) symphony orchestra with all their much larger, and more
respected, instruments...However, like all instruments, It does have
its' place....But For creating moods, nothing really beats the harmonica
except perhaps, the spoken word.
All the best, Blackie Schackner
