Jan, I use that method all the time and it works great. Best bet use a
low wattage soldering iron (the kind that are used for soldering printed
circuit boards work great) and the finest guage solder you can find.
Practice first on some old harps, it takes a bit of practice to put just
the smallest drop of solder on the tip of the reed. I place a razor
blade or feeler guage under the reed to stabilize it. Be very careful
not to put to much solder on it or you'll wind up soldering the tip of
the reed to the reed plate, if you do, your screwed! I use a rubber
abrasive disc on a rotary handpiece to grind the solder down to get the
reed in tune, though filing it by hand will work fine, though it's a bit
slower. Hope this helps.
