You're assuming a lot there. Do you suppose audiences are one
homogenous mass?

For the most part, yes. While there are some in the audience with
discriminating ears, most of humanity as I've experienced isn't very
sophisticated artistically (musically, in particular). They like the
familiar, more than anything else -- what they hear on the radio or on MTV.
When you start to water down your songlist with a ton of audience requests
which really don't fit your band, then what's the point? When the songlist is
driven by the audience then it's time to pull out the karaoke (sp?) machine.
