Can you tell me about other good harp microphones besides Shure 520?

Arguably the second most popular microphone next to the Shure 520-d is the
Astatic JT-30. I have a "Crystal Ball", which is an Astatic Jt-30 with a
volume control and a tweaked element to give more mid-range signal. I also
use a stock JT-30 The choice of microphone one uses to play amplified
harmonica is highly subjective, just as one's choice of harmonica and
amplifier! One of the main considerations is what kind of element is in the
mike ... crystal, dynamic or ceramic. Again, different strokes for different
folks! A good place to start (finish?) is Tom Ellis in Dallas. He has the
most extensive collection of vintage mikes for harp players that I've ever
seen as well as being very friendly and helpful. As he mentions, the
amplifier is very important to the microphone match.
I have found for harp it's best to stick to tube power and not only that ...
"six series" tubes such as 6V6 or 6L6 for the power tubes. If you want new
mikes, any of the mail-order places usually have a pretty decent selection of
harp mikes i.e.
Shaker (dynamic or crystal) Astatic (crystal) and the ever-popular Shure
520-D.
Hope this helps! Keep on Harpin'
