Subject: Re: High Notes

Back in the late 40's I was lucky enough to see Coleman Hawkins in L.A. Then
in the late 50's I saw Sam Butera (Butara)? with Louie Prima, in Las Vegas.
Sam was just a fraction below Coleman and a guy by the name of Charlie
Ventura, in be-bop tenor sax talent.... (IMO)..... Coleman Hawkins would just
stand there, non-chalant and play his brains out. The other two guys looked
like a car wreck, in action. Eyebrows raising and lowering, grimicing. bending
over and raising legs. The audience reacted the same. I strayed some from the
harp, but my point is, I think It's what comes out of the instrument and not
necessarily what the body does as long as the player is
gracious..........Kenny
