I'd agree that the better you get the better you can make a bad harp
perform. I'd also agree that getting a toolkit and learning to set up your
harps yourself can make a world of difference in the performance of the
harp and the player. But I find that the better I get the more particular
I am about the harps I play. I like plastic mouthpieces on short harps,
like Special 20s and Lee Oskars. I don't like overhanging reed plates,
like Hohner MS, or Golden Melodies. I don't think that coverplate profile
is such a little thing when it is one of the most obvous differences
between different models of diatonic harps. I like the profiles of Special
20s, Marine Bands, and Lee Oskars, dont' care much for the profiles of Big
Rivers or Golden Melodies.

Of course, all these are PURELY personal preferences, and everybody has
their own. That's why so many manufacturers can make so many models of
harps. But choosing the one that's right for you may not be a matter of
finding one that sounds. To me, that's like going shopping for a car and
buying the first one that starts. It's just not the way I want to do it.
