Ok, call me a crank if you wish, but I object to the little blurb added after my signature on every post I send to Harp-L. This represents 119 added bytes of data I receive for every copy of my mail I save for my files, 119 extra bytes on every piece of H-L mail added to my already seriously overloaded mailer on my server account, and 119 more bytes for every piece of mail I save in my files or on my hard drive.
Sure, it's small, but I resent having it just unilaterally tacked on without any consideration whether I want it or not. And, as a matter of fact, I have taken it on myself practically since I came on Harp-L to offer aid to those folks who have subbing and unsubbing problems and questions, so I am well aware of how to sub and unsub and use Harp-L's services, thank you very much. It's irritating to be reminded of it on every post I see, and then to have it pile up bytes in my mailer and files needlessly.
So, I don't agree with those who may think it's a novel idea... I think it sucks. Strangely enough, I suppose its purpose is to fend off the volume of bandwidth expended on the several requests for unsubbing or subbing we see on the list every week... I wonder if it's been thought out how much these 119 bytes on every piece of Harp-L mail adds up to, even daily? Saying I received 30 messages a day, which is not out of line, really [for example, on Jan. 30, I got 62 Harp-L messages, and on Feb. 2, there were 55,] that would mean 3,570 extra bytes on my mailer alone... per day!
I have always favored a short and sweet post by the admin to the list, even every day, same time same place, if desired, which would educate and remind those who might be in need of the information, and easily deleted by the rest of us. But, sorry, to me this idea is dumb.
And for a visually-oriented sort as I am, it's ugly, too.
[Here, Tim... it was me who borrowed your soapbox! :) ]
