Well, I decided to make the drive to Charlotte to catch Paul Rishell & Annie Raines and was definitely not disappointed. It was a small crowd, but a great show. Much to my surprise I ran into fellow harp-ler, Rich Rittenhouse who drove much further than I did ..He drove, by himself, from Blacksburg, Virginia for the show... thats a 3 to 3 1/2 hour drive....Rich loves his country blues! We had a great time partying and talking harp.
On With The Show: The first set was Paul & Annie doing their acoustic act with Paul playing a guitar similar to, if not, a National Steel Resonator (We couldn't make out the name on the headstock). They kicked off the set with a Jelly Roll Morton tune followed by a barrage of rural styled country blues, ala Sonny Terry and Browney Mcgee. For me, the highlight of the first set was Little Walters, "It's too Late Brother". Paul set the beat by muting and slapping the strings like a bass drum while Annie soloed all the way through...It was SWEET! She definitely has all the tricks and tone to die for. At times you would swear it was Little Walter and at other times James Cotton, she fanned the harp like she was putting out a fire. They also sampled a few original tunes which fell right into place with the rest of the material in the first set
The second set was an electric set with Paul playing a Strat and Annie playing through a bullet mic...... a stand up bass player and drummer joined in. The harp was a little more buried in the mix, but still sounding fantastic. Unfortunately I had to leave midway through the second set so I could count beans today at work ;>( All in all it was a good night for the blues.....
Gear Head Notes: Annie plays Marine Bands through a black face Fender Deluxe.... She also used a Boss Delay stompbox for a little slapback. Her Mic looked like an old JT-30. Paul played through what I believe was a Trace Elliot acoustic amp for the Resonator Guitar and a black face Vibrolux for his Strat (which he used for the second set).
