1)First i correct myself, (thanks dave) it IS not a ball and socket but more of a pivoting sleeve, the TMJ that is. As far as Piazzas TMD syndrome it might be linked more to learning a sloppy approach without the hindsight of consequences. Sloppy not meaning being a bad player ( I have most of his Cds). Pushing the harp that far back in the mouth will have its consequences. We must remember that the joint is connected by muscle and fibers. as we stretch our mouths in unnatural positions we put a strain on the TMJ by tugging and twisting it out of alignment. 2)Now I have a question??????? I predomonatly TB the harp when playing amplified and a good combination of both unplugged (nowdays). I have somewhat Mick Jagger lips so puckering single notes was a problem starting out. I didn't like the taste of the metal coverplates so I took to TBing with just the tip of my tongue. Do my fellow TBers cover just 1 hole like me or do you do like the books say and cover 2 or 3. I dont think I would ever had gotten the speed and agailiy that I have today by using my tongue in a way that IMHO would act like a slug across the comb. Answer by open forum. Has the group ever discussed they reasons openly for their particular style?

"He (Piazza) was very honest about many things. Some highlights included discussion of toungue-blocking where he said that the rapid change in his embouchure due to his TB technique he blames on the TMJ that he has had for 20 years. He said he does not recommend it! He said that he knows for a fact that Butterfield was not a blocker, who admitted he couldn't block, and even found it hard to octave block."
I wonder if Piazza's TMJ problem is the result of forcing the harmonica so far back into his mouth, as part of his tounge-blocking technique. George Smith was always telling him to push that harp far back; he stressed this point of technique during the '96 Harmonica Masterclass.
It seems that this would more directly act upon the back areas of the jaw, where I believe TMJ happens. Am I right?
Ray.
