I just received a phone call from LeRoi Sorgo, organizer/promoter of the famed Los Angeles area Harp Attacks, telling me that Robert "Rooster" Root died last Tuesday (5/12), and services were held Thursday. LeRoi just heard about it this morning, and called me to ask if I were aware. (I was not.) He had no further details, so I attempted to call Robert's room mates (ministers of his church), but the line had already been disconnected. I then tried to call his church in Glendale (Victory Outreach), and their lines had also been disconnected. This becomes a mystery to me, as Victory Outreach is a large organization, dealing mostly with the Latino population, in drug rehabilitation. I will continue to search.
Robert, a recently "born again" Christian, was a recognized player in the Venice Beach/Santa Monica area in the '60s. After doing the drug scene, he cleaned himself up, and was an active leader in the Victory Outreach program, playing Christian blues up and down the West Coast. He was recently playing regularly with Gashouse Dave and other groups at Jack's Sugar Shack, the Classroom, Cozy's, and various other rooms.
He also played at the Madcat Jam at Rusty's Surf Ranch on the pier on Jan 28.
He was not on the intenet, but he did furnish me with his itinerary once in a while. He will be missed.
