I have become confused (so what else is new?) by a few of the recent posts about overdriving amps. Perhaps the comments were specific to a certain amp but I sense that some of the ideas are generic (e.g. volume control on mic, tube changeouts, etc.). What I have garnered from the list is that to overdrive an amp it must be 1)a small amp (e.g. champ), 2)with AU or AY tubes (there is a direct contradiction in recent posts on this one), with volume control on a JT-30, with amp gain cranked to 9, and it would help if it is an old amp (running hot) and all this without feedback. There have also been some comments on effects and no comments regarding speakers.
So, what do you think the setups (and settings) would be to achieve amp overdrive? For example: Concert Amp, AT tubes, JT-30 mic with volume control, presence on 9, intensity on 10, volume on 4, bass 8, treble 2 miked to the PA, very tight cup, etc. (I don't own such an amp, its just an example). Reverse examples might be helpful too such as "you can't overdrive a '59 Bassman (again, not a fact, an example).
I can overdrive my Peavey Classic 30 by driving up the gain (Pre on 9, using a GB. I have to mike the amp because if I turn the volume (post) up past 2 it will sqeeeeeeel like a pig.
