Subject: 4th Position

I was asked to sit in on a song to be performed on July 10 at Ghengis
Cantina by the Vicki Hill Band and to attend a few rehearsals beforehand.
At the first rehearsal I learned the song was mainly in E minor and had a
bridge that went to G maj and D maj. I didn't have an LO natural E minor in
my bag so I was struggling along with an A harp. I taped the rehearsal and
went home to study the song, trying several different harps and wishing I
had an LO natural E minor. 2nd and 3rd position weren't cutting it.

Then I tried playing the song in 4th position on a G harp and it all fell
into place! I'd done only a minimal amount of fooling around with 4th
position before. This was the first time I'd ever had NEED to play a song
in 4th. It's pretty cool! As someone pointed out, its kind of a close
cousin of 1st position.

So I went to the second rehearsal and everyone was commenting on how great
and unusual the harp sounded. Kind of halfway between a bluesy and a cowboy
feeling. I also bought an LO E natural minor so we could try it that
way. It was somewhat easier for me to play the song on the E natural minor
.. but 4th position is more fun and more unusual sounding!
