My name is Denton Froese, and I'm a 21 year old chemistry student living in Regina, Saskatchewan (arguably the least blues-y city in Canada). A month or two ago, I decided to try learning the harmonica from a friend. I bought my first harp two days afterward, and I've been practicing ever since.
I joined the list about three weeks ago, hoping to hear some professionals talk shop. And, as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. Over the past three weeks I've heard discussions on breaking in the reeds, cryogenically freezing them, the relative merits of brass vs. steel, playing in the 13th position, and the best choices for amplifiers.
I've also been a bystander for the State vs. Bluesgeek, a lot of worship for Little Walter, more than a dozen people talking about records they've cut, a bunch of random gushing about the excellent performers seen at SPAH, and enough fish puns to put the fear of Cod into me.
This is an excellent list, and I have naught but praise for you all in making this the valuable resource that it is. Unfortunately, for me, it feels like I walked into the faculty lounge at the University. I could listen happily for hours, soaking in every word, but ultimately, the conversation keeps reminding me of the assignment that I still have to do for my class. And if you're going to ask a prof for help, you don't do it when he's talking with his friends. And so, I'm unsubscribing, with the hope that I'll return later, when I'm a better harp player, and I'm actually able to use the information here.
The best of luck to all of you.
Denton Froese
P.S. You might be wondering why I'm writing this. Well, another thing I've noticed over the last three weeks is a handful of blank unsubscribe messages. I always wonder what the motivations are for such people, who willingly bow out without so much as a peep. In case any of you have ever wondered the same thing, then I hope this helps. 'Til we meet again...
