Subject: amps

Thanks to George for relaying his experiences. I'm in the same position--
hobby harper in Gig Harbor. I almost hate to admit that my amp was
bought based mostly on physical size (I want to carry everything in
one trip from the car, so I wanted a one-hander), features, and cost.
For features, I selected one that can switch from 'rhythm' to solo at the
touch of a button, and reverb. Cost?--just a couple hundred please.
Wattage?--need to mike the amp one way or the other: 38 will do the trick.
The winner (3 years ago) was the Fender Bullet Reverb. Tiny for 38 watts.
Solid state; that gets me the louder overdriven solo channel plus a
mellower rhythm setting at the push of a button. Now I brace myself
for the rebuke from tube purists (I like them, really, but...)

For mic-ing, I made a cool little deal out of a coat hanger and shrink
wrap that I can hang on the amp. It positions the mic nicely, and really
saves on the 'footprint', plus it's very resistant to the smacks of
drunken dancers/wayward guitarists.
