Peter Madcat Ruth to Celebrate his 50th Birthday with a concert at the ARK, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.
This concert will also be the CD release party for the brand new Madcat & Kane CD: UP AGAINST THE WALL
On Friday, April 2, 1999, harmonica virtuoso, Peter Madcat Ruth, will celebrate his 50th birthday with a concert/party/recording session at the Ark. For this special occasion, Madcat has assembled a band of his all-time favorite musicians. The band will include:
Peter Madcat Ruth: harmonicas, kalimba, vocals Shari Kane: guitar, vocals Ruben Alvarez: drums, percussion Chris Brubeck: bass, trombone, piano Perry Robinson: clarinet Chris "Hambone" Cameron: piano Jason Boekeloo: bass Kevin Maul: lap steel
The entire April 2nd concert will be digitally recorded for a live CD, by the Alliance Mobile Recording Service.
Shari Kane and Madcat have been good friends since they met in 1978. They joined forces in 1990 to form the duo, Madcat & Kane. In December 1992 they released their first CD, KEY TO THE HIGHWAY, on the Schoolkids' Records label. This April 2nd concert will be the CD release party for their brand new CD: UP AGAINST THE WALL on the Hit Records label. Madcat & Shari have toured extensively throughout the United States. They have also performed in Brazil, Canada, Poland, Spain, and the Cayman Islands.
Besides touring with Madcat, Shari Kane continues to teaches blues guitar in Ann Arbor and at Washtenaw Community College. Her guitar playing can also be heard on Rory Block's 1992 release, AIN'T I A WOMAN.
Ruben Alvarez is a highly accomplished percussionist from Chicago. His drumming can be heard on Madcat & Kane's CD: KEY TO THE HIGHWAY, and Madcat's CD: MADCAT'S HARMONICOLOGY. He has toured and recorded with John Mayall, Dave Mason, and the Latin jazz band, Cheveré. He is currently a session drummer in Chicago, and teaches percussion at the Northwestern University School of Music.
For ten years Chris Brubeck, son of Dave Brubeck, toured world-wide with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. He is a multi-instrumentalist (electric bass, trombone, and piano), song writer, record producer, and an orchestral arranger. His most recent CD, BACH TO BRUBECK, recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra, features his own composition, "Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra." Chris Brubeck and Madcat have been making music together for 30 years. They first started playing together in 1969 in the rock group New Heavenly Blue. Their recordings together include:
EDUCATED HOMEGROWN by New Heavenly Blue, RCA Records, 1970; NEW HEAVENLY BLUE by New Heavenly Blue, Atlantic Records, 1972; TRUTH IS FALLEN by Dave Brubeck and the Cincinnati Symphony, Atlantic Records, 1972; TWO GENERATIONS OF BRUBECK by Two Generations of Brubeck, Atlantic Records, 1973; BROTHER THE GREAT SPIRIT MADE US ALL by Two Generations of Brubeck, Atlantic Records, 1974; SECRET SAUCE by Sky King, Columbia Records, 1975; and RED WHITE & BLUES by Crofut & Brubeck, Albany Records, 1992.
Perry Robinson is one of the world's premier jazz clarinetists. The son of legendary folk music composer, Earl Robinson, Perry has been immersed in music all his life. He has recorded and toured with an amazing list of musicians including Ginger Baker, Carla Bley, Dave Brubeck, Allen Ginsberg, Charlie Hayden, Odetta, Pete Seeger, and Archie Shepp. Madcat & Perry first met 25 years ago, and they recorded and toured together for three years as members of Two Generations of Brubeck.
Chris "Hambone" Cameron is one of Chicago's most in-demand keyboard players. In 1977 he was co-founder of Madcat's Pressure Cooker, and in 1983 he was co-founder of the Madcat/Hambone Band. He has toured and recorded with John Mayall, and the Latin jazz band, Cheveré. He is currently a session keyboard player in Chicago, and tours and records with the band Sonia Dada.
Jason Boekeloo recorded and toured with Madcat from 1979 thru 1982. He is one of the best bass players on the planet. His bass playing can also be heard on Madcat's CD, MADCAT'S HARMONICOLOGY.
Kevin Maul is an exquisite slide guitarist. He currently tours and records with Robin & Linda Williams. He's been a guest on Prairie Home Companion numerous times. His slide playing can be heard on two cuts of Madcat & Kane's CD: UP AGAINST THE WALL.
