Do you get tension in your shoulders and upper back when playing? Can
anyone
recommend the proper posture for playing? I'm a new player and may just be
developing strength but it sure is uncomfortable (not painful so I'm certain
I'm not straining my back, just tense).

I used to have that problem when trying to do "shakes" and such.
Like most of these types of things ... Time is the cure! As you get more
experience under yopur belt (especially onstage!) the tension level will
naturally decrease as you get more used to playing.
