Subject: Re: Rock Harp (was: Mick Jagger Harmonica: Who can resist?)

With talk about harmonica in rock/pop/funk recently, Lee Oskar came up. I
have allways found his playing to be highly influential to what I try to do.
The way he fits in perfectly with War is simply brilliant--remove the harp
and the song falls apart, IMO. I find Lee's playing on "Why Can't We Be
Friends"--check out "Leroy's Latin Lament"--to be the finest example of
harmonica in funk that I have ever heard, or most likely will ever hear.
Also, it's just a great 70's fusion record, coming from the r&b side of
fusion, rather than the more common jazz side (think Miles Davis' "Agharta",
Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" or Weather Report's "Heavy Weather" for
fusion from the jazz side). One of my favorite albums--which means I listen
to it once every other month, I just have too many cds!
