Amen to that! My first amp was a Bassmen Ten, which I bought 'cause it said
Bassman on it and it had four 10s in it. The knobs were very hard to turn.
It was very loud, and sounded distorted. I paid $500 dollars for it.
A couple years later I came to feel that it was too loud, too trebly,
and the distortion was tight and harsh, and the knobs had never loosened up.
Plus, it was extremely heavy.
Upon preparing to sell it I learned that a Ten in excellent shape would
only get me MAYBE $300. I got real lucky and sold it to another harp player
for $375. He loved it and is still using it.
I now have five amplifiers, each suited to a different
environment/mood/pocketbook.

BTW, the great sound I was getting out of my replacement for the Ten (an RI
Bassman) sounds very thin and weak on my old recordings with that amp. The
equipment is not everything.
