From: John Thaden Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 14:28:32 -0500 Subject: Player sought for BHF'99 Fri 4:30 materials test
I'm interviewing for a volunteer player for the materials test on Friday 4:30-5:30 P.M. April 16. Those interested must be intermediate/advanced diatonic players who can play a brief test melody repeatedly with good reproducibility. They must also be willing to meet with me earlier on Friday afternoon, say at 3:30, to iron out details and practice on the instruments.
The melody is negotiable (John Walden did a fine job in 1997 with an abbreviated, third-position "Summertime"--the first and last phrases joined together), but cannot exceed 15 seconds length. I think the melody should contain one or more sustained blow and draw notes, chords or invervals; and sustained bent notes; but probably no overblows, technical hurdles, or excessive speed, since these may be less faithfully reproducible. I think also that the instuments should be played uncupped so materials effects may be heard more easily, so the volunteer won't be sounding as fine as usual and must feel comfortable with that.
The instruments will all be assembled with one set of new "A" Big River plates, and held together with a modified Vice-Lok (vice-grips) pliers that allows rapid disassembly. Right now, the reeds are factory-gapped and tuned, but the player could regap and tune them if we can meet early enough. The clamp is bulky but does not impede playing nor sound issuing from the instruments.
If you are interested, please call me today or tonight, any time before 11:45 PM Eastern Standard Time, at (501) 224-7859. When you call, I'll ask you to play the tune you have selected twice through, will answer any further questions, and will find out how you'd like to be contacted if I decide to accept the generous offer of your time and assistance. If I do not answer, please use our answering machine to leave the same information and to play the test melody twice through.
I'm hoping you'll help me out with this and will be most grateful. If I have to, I'll play the melodies myself, but I prefer the study be a double-blind one and I will know which harmonica comb is which.
