Well, ... I will disagree with those who say "drugs" can open up new avenues of awareness, musical-wise. John Popper? You better believe I like his harping. I think he is absolutely mezmerizing, but ... I don't think doing drugs or alcohol has anything to do with. At any rate, creative ability or ability in general has simply nothing to do with drugs and in the long run, the use of drugs will decrease ones musical ability and creativity. I just came back from Florida where it rained virtually every day, where I visited my brother and his family which consists of a wife and a 29 year old boy who is a trememdous guitar player. Unfortunately, his son's use of drugs has permanently taken him out of the professional music arena. He is now on a drug maintenance program and has been diagnosed as mentally ill, due pretty much wholy to his drug intake. My stand is solid and that stand is that we are our brother's keeper and if we, excluding myself, as professionals glorify drugs, we give many, many children and teens a excuse to use and abuse drug. As a teaching professional, I, deservably so, would lose my license and not be able to practice my chosen profession if I abused drugs. We are our brother's keeper, and any justification otherwise is a pipe dream.
We went Sunday night to hear fellow Oklahoman Toby Keith play on an Army Tour. I had met him before, and felt like when I retired I would try out for his vacant harpman position. Well, ... he has a harpman, but there was way too many people to get up front and try to slam dunk his harpman, so I am now looking for other positions available in the harp arena when I retire! ha!
