Does anyone have this problem? (I perused the archives and learned a lot, but it persists... and I haven't become an electrician or great soundman in the meantime :-\). I have a couple different (smallish, 10-50 watts)amps that I love practing and playing small gigs with. I like the full muddy sound for most stuff and I therefore usually have a lot of bass, pre-amp on high and main on low...and whatever else I can do to get the distortion and no feedback. the problem is when I go play with a new band, or get to a hall with a big PA and they take one look at my settings and treat me like I'm radioactive. If I'm not careful some soundman- or even a guitar player that thinks he's a soundman- will whip all my settings down and act they've just saved us from an evening of embarrassing feedback. You know, wide-eyed and shaking their heads like they'd just taken matches from a kid.
But that's not the problem. The problem is (be it with "line-out" or with additional mic's) that when i hook into the PA, and with all the other players and equipment, I DO usually have a hard time getting enough volume without feeding back. And i DO have to let the soundmen take over. It's like a whole new animal. And they don't give a damn for my 'love of distortion'. In fact that makes me like a photo-model that likes glare.
Now I know this is a common problem, but my question is this: If I have exactly the sound I want, with my 30 watt standing alone (say for a 100 person backyard party with moderate volume from drums/guitar), is there some quasi-formula for what to do when I plug in to a PA situation in a big hall (with brass section, 2 guitars lots of other noise and feedback dangers). Especially if I'm using a line-out cable, shouldn't I be able to just adjust the PA somehow without all that "anti-feedback gadgetry" that they keep telling me I have to have? For instance, could I get rid the bass on my amp and make it up on the PA (That's kind of rhetorical because I know that doesn't work)... Ya know? Robb-in-Rhineland
