Hi Benders,
Using tiny plastic tubes, I have connected a U-tube manometer to a C Big River diatonic harp. I can measure the difference in pressure between the player's mouth and reed chamber 2 or 3.
If the pressure differences are about the same for bent and unbent draw notes in the same hole, then that will be convincing evidence that bends do not require hole constriction by the player's lips......and I'll have to eat crow! However, if the pressure difference is significantly greater, then that is evidence that the player is constricting the hole.
I will bring this instrumented harp to SPAH, along with plenty of individually-packaged, anti-bacterial wet wipes to sanitize it between tests. I will be trying to collar the best benders to participate in the test. If I don't approach you, look me up to see my gadget and try your skill at making unconstricted bends.
