I feel that I must point out one very good reason why brass would be better
than steel in a harmonica reed. While steel will last longer before it
fails, when it fails it will break off. When brass fails it bends. If I
were a manufacturer I would certainly not want to put myself in position for
potential lawsuits because a reed broke off and lodged in someone's throat.
While this is a very rare occurrence with brass, I would guess that it would
become more common with the use of steel for the reeds.

If you really want a high quality chromatic, you have to go to the
customizers, who have the time to focus on one instrument and get it right.
A mass manufacturer will not be capable of this, unless they radically
change the means of production (which, I beleive, is being looked into by at
least one of the major harmonica companies) into a single-person/single-unit
situation, IMO.

Still, the customizers are fairly inexpensive and are able to shape their
products to the individuals desires. Thus, for a reasonable cost you can
get a mouthpiece which fits perfectly into _your_ mouth, I sincerely doubt
that any manufacturer will measure your mouth and then make the mouthpiece.
Good, quality instruments in both diatonic and chromatic are availiable from
customizers, so why not take advantage of this current rennaisance (pun
intended)?
