It was asked: said the looking.. "Plinking" is the preferred method. You don't need to blow a note to get the right frequency of a reed. Try this: Take out your chromatic tuner and a bare reedplate, no comb or coverplates attached. With a small non-metalic implement, plink a reed. This means pull it up slightly(obviously without bending it, same as gapping) and let go. It "plinks" back into place, but really it vibrates back at it's frequency. Your tuner will show this frequency. THIS IS NOT A SECRET. Haven't we all seen the video of the Hohner factory with the ladies hand tuning the Marine Band reedplates?? They actually use a column of air but it has the same effect. Think for a minute, is someone gonna file a little off a reed, re-assemble the harp and try it, and then maybe have to repeat that? "Oh shit, it's still a few cents off, better dis-assemble it again and take off a few more cents. Oh shit, now it's a little sharp, better dis-assemble it again and try again." Not even close. No one could afford the labor to do this. Try it, you'll like it.
