hi All,
i originally posted these questions to Bill (Hering Maven) Price, but now that i know his computer is AWOL, i'd like to ask the list.
i picked up a Hering 501/64 (5164) to replace my Chrometta 12. my experience with it was pretty much what Bill P. has posted to harp-l - plays nicely right out of the box, but with valve work needed.
so here are the questions:
on a 4 octave chromatic, is valve slap unavoidable in the bottom octave due to the length of the valves/reeds?
the valves appear to be pretty cheesy - they really didn't take to having their stiffeners reshaped to press them down onto the reedplates (vs. doing this on the Chrometta). one stiffener even started separating from the valve; the stiffeners appear to be glued much further along the length of the valve than the Chrometta. is this normal due to the lower octave?
i haven't taken the reedplates off the comb yet - i was hoping to just get away with adjusting the external valves, but that isn't going to happen. this harp appears to have two tiny screws on the mouthpiece edge of the reedplate. is it necessary to remove them to get the plates off the comb (i'm hoping that i don't, but it looks like i do)? my mechanical skills with small parts is rather limited.
should i be considering re-valving this harp even though it is brand new? if so, do you have any recommendations for materials? (this echoes the recent question by anach~tv.es)
at the moment, the lower octave valve slap is annoyingly noticeable, even to those who aren't overly familiar with harmonica.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
