Subject: # Part Question about Chromatic Harp

Greetings All:

A belated Happy New Year to all the members of harp-l, and a big thank you
to all who have responded to my newbie questions in the last year. I have
learned much just reading your messages and appreciate all the help.

I am looking to expand eventually to play a chromatic harp but have learned
from you all that valved diatonics exist. My first question is should I get
a valved diatonic before paying the extra money to buy a chromatic, or just
go for it and get the chromatic? Is there any advantage ( or disadvantage
for that matter) in getting a valved diatonic first?

If the decision is to just go directly to the chromatic, I have observed on
harp-l that for beginners like me, 3 suggestions keep coming up, the Hering
5148, Hohner 270, and Hohner CX-12. I see the price of the CX-12 is about
twice that of the other two. Can anyone tell me if this means the harp is
really that much better, or will last that much longer, or give me fewer
problems. Why such a big price difference? I've heard good things on harp-l
about the CX-12 and am leaning to that one, but trying to justify the extra
cost. Any other advice, comments, suggestions, will be appreciated as
always.

Finally, I understand the CX-12 is a cross tuned harp. Is that harder to
learn or makes no difference for someone like me who has never tried
chromatic before?

As always, I appreciate the input.
