Hey all, Just throwing in my 2 cents on Cakewalk and other software-based music programs... I work with computers all day, and while I found Cakewalk and similarly Cubase reasonably easy to understand, most people who aren't really computer literate and have some prior knowledge of computer audio terms and such find it intimidating, confusing, and way too hard to do simple things with it. Unless you specifically want to learn about computer-based recording, as opposed to simply getting 1 or 2 or 4 tracks on tape and eq'd and effected and mixed, stick with analog equipment for simplicity sake. Beware that these programs may crash your computer occasionally as well, and/or get you hooked into continually buying computer upgrades. Also be prepared to deal with system config. issues that are just not a problem on dedicated digital or analog recording systems. I want to spend more time and thought on playing music than on recording it, and in general I find that analog devices tend to be more intuitive and require less baby-sitting and manual-reading than computer based ones. Plus I've had cakewalk 9.0 and Cubase crash my Dell more than any other kind program. Caveat emptor !!
