There is also the original Buzz on this list, very active in the harmonica scene although he doesn't make his presence felt much on-list presently.
I'm speaking, of course, of Buzz Krantz, he of the inimitable manner and appearance, the biker Santa in the purple suit, who holds court at harmonica festivals, running the nightly blues jam and emceeing some of the concert events. He's also the president of the Windy City Harmonica Club and a close friend of Joe Filisko.
A huge grizzled man, Buzz can hold his own in a dissing contest with angry Hells Angels (the ability to back it up with force is a prerequisite), yet is the sweetest guy around. He loves outrageous jokes, and can get away with teasing and taking liberties with those around him - often perfect strangers - because one senses from the git-go that it's all in fun and that there isn't a mean bone in his body; he has a deep sense of decency and respect for individuality, coupled with a delight and amusement at the vagaries of human behavior.
Peter Madcat Ruth tells me he actually has a little Buzz shrine. I can see the benefit of meditating on the qualities of Buzzness.
Anyone who has been to SPAH or the Buckeye Festival in the last 7 ot 8 years knows what it means to be a "close personal friend" of Buzz (I even have the t-shirt to prove it).
