Subject: Bending and OVERblows

Ironman Mike Curtis writes:

"And to my ear, bending produces
noticeably better tone than overblowing, and without the heroics."

While this pertains to only his ear, even so I think it is an overly
simplistic statement. In my opinion, some bends sound better than some
OVERbends, and some OVERbends sound better than some bends. I don't think
it's fair to lumb all bends into the same category, nor all OVERbends.

Even in terms of heroics.. too simplistic. In my opinion, some OVERbends
are more dependable (easier to hit consistently) than some bends.

That being said, it is certainly true that a lot of OVERbends don't come out
clean, because they're difficult to play well (good tone and pitch) and end
up sounding awful (to my ear).

It's just that with multi-pitch bends, the "intermediate bends" (e.g. 3 draw
whole step or 2 draw half step) can often sound out of place and/or out of
tune, sometimes even more so than OVERbends. One reason is the
participation of both reeds in making the sound, where OVERbends are
single-reed sounds, as are natural notes.

Plenty of challenges to go around. That's one reason why the diatonic is so
fun to play...eh?
