I use a stuff called "Ballistol", which is probably only available in
Germany. It's an oil used primarily to clean and lubricate guns, but
people are also using it to remove ticks on pets, and it's not bad for
the health. It's a very fluid oil that dries very very slowly (think
months) and doesn't leave any residue. As I said, this exact stuff is
probably only available in these parts, but as it is a gun lubricant, you
might try your local gun dealer; they'll certainly have something in
stock.

I wouldn't use vaseline, though, since it leaves a very icky residue.
