Last week at the Red Archibald benefit, Mick Martin (or was it Michaels) was telling me that Dennis Wilson always used the bass harmonica to figure out rhythms for Beach Boys songs. He mentioned an out-of-print album that demonstrated this, and promsied to send me a dub.
Hmm, OK.
Well, last night, I was watching the all-star tribute to Brian Wilson, the writing/arranging/studio force behind the Beach Boys. Songs were being performed live, and lo and behold I see someone behind the singer with a bass harmonica. This appeared (and was occasionally audible) in several numbers.
It wasn't Tommy Morgan - or Danny Wilson. It was a dark-haired younger man of perhaps olive complexion and medium height and build who tripled on bass harmonica, bari sax and clarinet. During the credits, the names of the band members went by very fast and did not indicate who played what (I should have been taping at least that part).
I assume that bass harmonica was included because it was used on the original recordings - most of the tunes were done as faithful re-creations of the orignal arrangements but with different singers.
Anyone know anything about this?
Winslow
