Subject: Astatic Brown Biscuit Discovery!

- --=====================_18370286==_.ALT

While I was having a couple of new tires put on my vehicle
yesterday, I decided to walk across the street to a second
hand store, while I was waiting for the tire shop to finish.

Once inside the store, I headed straight towards the audio
section, full of old records, and electronic gadgets. You see,
I had cased this store a few times already, and knew right
where I wanted to be. On one of the shelves in this area was
a bunch of old record players, projectors, radios, ect. but what
caught my eye was this device called a "RECORDIO" made by
Wilcox-Gay from the 40's. It had bake-o-lite push buttons marked,
Radio, Radio Record, Phono, Phone Record, & Microphone.

When I spun the thing around, to begin my search for a mic of
some kind, I was very surprised to see a brown biscuit Astatic
with just the brown wooden handle connected, and a brown cloth
cord with a two prong connector. (This one had a chrome grill)

Without blinking an eye I hauled the whole unit to the check
out counter at the front, and paid the $25. asking price.

Once back home, I peeked under the hood to find the original
crystal element inside the shell. I quickly soldered a 1/4 jack
on the cord and plugged that puppy into a reissue Bassman, and
the signal was LOUD and very strong. This element sounds
better than any other crystal element I own!

Now I'm gonna put a old style connector on the mic,
and she'll be good to go!

Indeed I'm stoked, as this is about a 1:100 type find for me.

The moral of the story: When getting your tires changed,
find the nearest second hand store!! 'Cause ya never know...

Maybe I'll even make a small practice amp out of the RECORDIO
unit too...it has a sweet looking 6'' Jensen and a sweet looking
amp section inside the small cabinet ;))

Keep your Eyes open,
See ya,

~Donnie~
