Subject: amp question

Dear Harp-L List,

I'm playing with a somewhat eclectic folk/blues/rock group (dobro, guitar,
bass, and harp). We mostly play coffee houses/small clubs (although we have
a bigger gig coming up in August at a folk festival. This is my question.
We play a range of things and in some cases I really want an over-driven
blues sound. For these songs I play a Green Bullet through an old Premier
Twin-8 amp. In other cases (some of the more folky stuff) I need a clean
sound. For these tunes I've been playing through a Shure SM 57 on a stand,
directly into the PA.

My problem is that in some of our larger gigs my little Premier amp isn't
really loud enough to function as a de-facto monitor (which is how the
guitarist's tend to use their amps). And there will probably be some
ocassions in which there isn't an extra input in the PA to mic. my amp. I'm
trying to figure out if there is a set-up I can use that would allow me to
get a decent straight and over-driven sound via a single, somewhat larger
amp (that would give me the volume flexibility to hear myself on stage) and
avoid changing mics.

I had in mind a Peavey Delta Blues or Fender Hot Rod Deleuxe with a
line-out to the PA. Then I could just use the SM 57 (possibly with a
distortion pedal of some kind for the over-driven songs) and simply switch
back and forth. I'd probably also need some easy way to adjust the gain for
switching between cupping the mic and having it on a stand. I realize that
this sounds complicated but I'm trying to be as self-sufficient and
prepared as I can for lots of different possibilities (crappy PA, no extra
lines to mic the amp, etc.).

Am I being slightly insane here? Has anyone had any experience playing
through either of these amps, for either a clean or distorted sound? And
has anyone ever tried this idea of getting both sounds from a single mic?

Thanks,
Grant Kester
