I just heard a CD by Brendan Power that really impressed me. Thought others might be interested in knowing about it since, its distribution is probably not very widespread. I believe it is only available directly from him.
It is called "Live in Ireland" and consists of music he recorded in various venues while touring Ireland with guitarist and vocalist Andrew White. It's quite an impressive album but difficult to describe. The music is great, the harmonica playing, vocals and guitar, but I don't know what genre it fits into. It's a combination of traditional Irish, jazz, and folk, but a lot more that I can't put a label on. And the "whole lot more" part is really good. Of course Brendan Power is spectacular on the harmonica. I suppose most harmonica players know him from his "New Irish Harmonica" CD which seems to have become the de facto standard for harmonica playing in Irish music. His style is different on this CD. It's quite original. I suppose I would have to call it jazz/Irish, but that doesn't begin to describe it very well. Andrew White has some great vocals and guitar work. He strikes me a bit like the contemporary Paul Brady, but again, that leaves a lot out. Together live they make some intriguing and highly enjoyable music. They even leave a significant mistake in one track that seems to add something to it, especially if you are among those who play music rather than simply listen to it. Anyway, it's worth a listen. I'd sure like to hear them live. Available from Brendan's website www.brendan-power.com.
