<< Adler played by sick kids bedsides, on top of tanks in the desert in wartime, he played to gangsters, Kings and Queens, with symphony orchestras, for balletic Dance, had films written round him, wrote film scores. >>
And, having spent most of his life in exile from the US as a political dissident, he continued until the end of his days to be an active supporter of left-wing and labour causes - I mean *physically* active. He himself believed that his persecution by the secret police in the US began when he refused to play to racially segregated audiences of troops during WW2. "That was noted, you can bet," he said. He was braver than most of us. The fact that he was a notorious egotist is surely part of what goes to make up a big, colourful character, a rare giant in his field. It's also important to remember that Adler considered hismelf to be an *entertainer* above all else - - so the famous ego was to an extent part of his showbiz persona; his performances didnt just consist of a virtuoso playing the mouth organ - they consisted of a larger than life character joking, anecdoting, and dropping names. (Incidentally, his is one of the names sometimes suggested as being the original of the presumably apocryphal story which goes ... "Adler, you are the most appalling name-dropper!" "Oh, don't you start - the Queen Mother was nagging me about that only last week ...
