Subject: Ah, Spah!

Great SPAH this year. Sorry to not see more Harp-lers hanging around.
Madcat's seminar on rhythmic playing was excellent, and his performance
at the Blues Bash was phenomenal. "New Harmonica Boogie" almost gave me
cardiac arrest (with excellent work by our own Danny Wilson on bass and
[?] on chord). Our own Tom Ball gave an entertaining seminar with Q&A
and a solid Blues Bash performance with Kenny Sultan playing that great
finger-pickin' guitar. What a treat to hear Rob Paparrozi tear it up in
both the Jazz Show and Blues Bash in the same night (this guy can do it
all, including leading the blues jam in a raucous rendition of "Flip,
Flop & Fly" at 3:00 AM). Brendan Power was unbelievable playing so many
styles so well. Great performances by Tommy Morgan, Doug Tate, Mike
Turk, Sandy Weltman, Jeff Grossburg, Chris Michalek, Randy Singer (oh,
he plays blues too!), and many others. Blues jams were incredible - I
mean sitting around a circle with Rodrigo, Jelly Roll Johnson, Mojo Red,
Brendan Power, Joe Filisko, Buzz Krantz, Rob Paparozzi, Randy Singer,
Ben Nathanson, David Fairweather, Richard Sleigh, Harmonica John, Beth
[?], Frederic Yonnet, Steve Webb, Mike Turk, Chris M, etc. trading solos
was just too much. (If I'd had a pocket tape recorder, I would have
enough stuff to work on for a lifetime - hopefully my brain can remember
some of it on its own). Buzz leading the blues jam was practically
worth the price of admission by itself. The Joe Filisko teach-ins were
great for us that needed a little help with some of the more fundamental
stuff. Oh well, I guess I'll have to go next year too. Hope to see
some of you harp-lers there who couldn't make it this year -well worth
it.
