Subject: ASCAP

A representative from ASCAP showed up at a local blues jam last night. This
jam has been going on for years and attracts musicans from around the city.
I've spend hundreds of hours in this club honing my harmonica skills.

The ASCAP rep met with the owner/drummer and demanded a large amount of
cash, or face a lawsuit. Apparently, the TV, recorded music between sets,
and the covers of songs performed at the bar demand payment to ASCAP.

Most of the music at this club is performed by young musicans, making very
little money, playing original punk, thrash, ska, and rock. On Tuesday's
it's blues.

Bottom line: It appears the club is going to shut down and go out of
business. One more live music venue will have bitten the dust.

A question for anyone who might have an answer:

Is is illegal to play (not record) a song written by someone else, unless
permission is granted or $$$ changes hands?
