From: "LUDO BECKERS"
Subject: cd review M.Turk-H.Levy-R.Paparozzi-M.Peloquin-B.Power-C.Michalek

I bought the "Hot Summer Music" cd from one of the harpplayers on it, who
suggested I put a review on harp-l so...
(4 tracks are not reviewed because of no harp content - with apologies to
the excellent musicians, but it IS a harp-list ;-))
Mike Turk plays quite fluently -this time on chromatic- in Miles Davis'
"Half Nelson", where he incorporated the shoutchorus from "Lady Bird". He
and the band sound very energetic and were having a great time on this one,
I'm sure.
In "There Will Never Be Another You", a song that I thought I was finally
getting down a little on my diatonic (in 2nd pos.), Howard Levy plays some
lightning runs and in an incredible (Bb harp 12th pos.) solo shows his
thorough harmonic knowledge of the song...dazzling.
"You Better Watch Yourself" (Little Walter) has Rob Paparozzi on vocal and
Chicagoblues-style gutbucket harp (followed by a Hammond B-3 solo
by...Howard)(+Bernard Purdie on drums!) and a 2nd harpsolo by Michael
Peloquin, who obviously has done some hot overblow workout (both 2nd pos.).
Brendan Power seems to be shifting from key to key like a breeze in
"Exhileration". I won't even TRY to find out what harptuning he's using here
(have a go at it; it's diabolically intrigueing).
"This Masquerade" is (I think) wrongly credited; composer of this beautiful
tune is Leon Russell! This one really left me with my mouth open (in awe -
not yawning), and I would even buy the album for this one only. Levy puts
everything in here: his incomparable technical abilities combined with a
great feel for the song (Eb+lowEb+Bb harps). I believe this was organist
Jack McDuff's last recording session btw. The Gershwin tune "Lady Be Good"
has a nice solo build-up (C harp 2nd pos.) by Chris Michalek, who also shows
a good command of overblowtechnique.
Harpwise this (live) cd is a treat! I think it's available at
www.hotspringsrecords.com (no affiliation whatsoever).
