I use a tube MP. It's a very solid, simple tube preamp that produce about 65-70 dB of gain. I've used it for lots of recording stuff, and on stage at the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga and in several smaller venues. In every case, I was aiming for a fairly clean sound, and the unit delivered. I don't know how it'll perform as a distortion box. Clint Hoover uses one; I don't know what sound he's going after with it.
The 12AX7 tube did go microphonic, so I had to replace it. Not bad for over a year's worth of service.
The tube MP is alos very useful for recording lots of other instruments, such as a bass guitar. It makes a good direct box at the end of an effects loop, too.
The money I spent on mine was well spent.
