don't know if anyone had a chance to see the first part of this four part series on pbs. as the title suggests, the series examines the music that has come to define america...blues, country, jazz, gospel (white and black), and folk...where they came from, how they evolved and intersected, and what it means now. harmonica highlights of last week's included deford bailey and jimmy riddle with roy acuff (that clip looked like an early video, with riddle mugging for the camera). there were also profiles of jimmie rodgers, the carter family, classic female blues, and thomas dorsey. this week's harmonica highlight will most likely be rice miller (aka sonny boy ll), with what looks like some cool footage, plus robert lockwood talking about broadcasting with him from helena. the show will also look at cowboy songs, bob wills and western swing, leadbelly, woody guthrie, and some cat named elvis. this doesn't look as in depth as ken burns jazz series, as this is only four hours, and is looking at a much broader range of music, but still a good look at what went on in american music for a hundred years. i understand that the dvd/cd box set has even more performance footage.
