since it seems to be a kind of tradition around here, i thought i'd quickly (yeah, right) tell y'all about my weekend. you won't learn anything here, so if you want to know about LeRiff or bend-squeal, move on...
i played in front of a corwd for the first time this past saturday, all friends, at a "hootenany" some some co-workers threw. since my dept boasts more than one guitarist, a keyboardist, 2 drummers, and an altosax player, the hootenany seemed like a good idea ;)
in any case, i brought my harps, all 11 of them (oops, where'd that C go?) and nervous as all heck got up "on stage" to join the rest of the crew. not realizing we'd have amps galore, i didn't bring a mic, so i just played a vocal mic hooked to a "tascam 388" (whatever that is).
anyway... we played a couple of 12 bar blues in E, and though i mostly played root notes over the chords, people loved it! it was exciting and nerve-wracking. there was also an SRV tune in A (it might have been a shuffle). i chugged chords alot, but backed out when pointed at to solo. i'll be ready next time. the one sour note of the night was when i was asked to play along to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" in A minor. i didn't know how to play in a minor key, but a voice in the back of my head kept whispering "3rd position," 3rd position." of course, i didn't know how to play in 3rd, and i ended up switching between 1st and 2nd with less than stellar results. ah well... next time, next time.
now i'm practicing minor and i'm more feverish than ever to learn and practice and play! so, for those of you still with me, i do have a couple of questions:
1.) i've heard in previous threads that saxes and harps should be in tune, but can't find how to get them in tune -- some help, please? 2.) i always hear 3rd is good for minor blues. wouldn't it sounds just as good alongside major chords? and just what is the difference, notewise, between a major and minor chord? (i.e., C is CEG, right? so what's C minor?)
anyway, it was great. thanks to all on the list who've ever helped me with anything. ;D
