Blues singer and harmonica player Big Mama Willie Mae Thornton was born on this day in 1926. Thornton had hits with "Hound Dog" and "Ball and Chain" well before they were covered by Elvis Presley and Janis Joplin. He played the harmonica to augment her powerful voice as well as working with George "Harmonica" Smith, Walter Horton and others.
